Why Site Grading Matters More Than You Think

April 5, 2026

Grading is one of those things that nobody thinks about until it's done wrong. A flat-looking lot might still drain toward your building, your neighbor's property, or straight into a low spot that turns into a pond every time it rains.

What Is Site Grading?

Site grading is the process of shaping the ground to control water flow, create level building surfaces, and prepare a site for construction. It's not just pushing dirt around — it's engineering the ground to work the way you need it to.

The Consequences of Bad Grading

We've seen it all: cracked foundations from poor drainage, parking lots that flood after a half-inch rain, retaining walls that fail because the grade behind them was never done right. Fixing grading mistakes after construction is ten times more expensive than doing it right the first time.

What Good Grading Looks Like

Proper grading means water flows away from structures, the site drains to designated areas, and the surface is compacted to the right specs for whatever's going on top of it. We use GPS-guided equipment to make sure the grade is accurate and consistent across the whole site.
